How to write a good dissertation: the data analysis

(Part V)

The data analysis chapter is the most important part of your research project. It reveals your results, and the specific findings of your dissertation. The data analysis chapter therefore has to be arranged very carefully, and the findings have to be analysed in a way, which is related to previous research and findings. This brief article suggests several simple steps on how to produce a consistent and clear data analysis chapter as part of your dissertation.

Dissertation writing service websites, as well as essay writing service experts recommend that the data analysis chapter should follow the structure of the results chapter. Separate your findings by themes, or clusters (groups). For each one of your conclusions prepare a separate paragraph, and make sure that this time you offer analytical insight into your own findings. Remember, the data analysis chapter is different from the findings chapter because it shows your analytical understanding of the findings. Its purpose is not to simply state the results, but also to show how your findings relate to existing research. The main purpose of the data analysis chapter is to demonstrate whether your findings are consistent with already published research, or whether they show something which is different from the already existing observations. It is the data analysis chapter which shows how your research project was unique in terms of findings and contributions to your chosen research topic.

There is no universal way in which to structure your data analysis chapter. This will depend entirely on your research aims and objectives, and on your research question.  It is advisable however, always to separate the findings into themes, which will shape the structure of the whole chapter. The tutor needs to be able to understand your findings, their significance, and their relation with existing research. It is important that in this chapter you make associations with the observations, already made in your literature review chapter. For clarity, it is good to state your main findings in the beginning of the chapter, in order to provide simple overview of what is to be discussed. At the end of the chapter, provide several conclusive lines, paving the way for your conclusion and recommendations chapter. It is possible that in some cases the data analysis and the results (findings) are presented in one and the same chapter. Make sure you discuss the structure of your dissertation with your tutor, so that your chosen outline fits your research aims and objectives.
