Looking for accommodation in a new country or city is daunting and many students find it challenging to find a room which is affordable and convenient. Moreover, international students who do not have the chance to visit the UK prior to their studies, have to find accommodation online.

The first thing you have to consider if looking for accommodation is the location. Travel in the UK and especially in London is expensive and while many universities have on campus residence halls, others don’t have the capacity to accommodate all new students. This means that you have to look for a room off campus.

Choosing a room closer to the university will save money on transportation and most importantly – it will save time. Bear in mind though that if your university has a central location, your rent will probably be higher.

The average price for a double room in London starts from 400 pounds per month, and in some cases bills are included. In central London prices are significantly higher, starting from 600 pounds per month for a double room.  Most students cannot afford to live on their own, and often share a flat with other people. Some popular student areas in London, where prices can be reasonable are New Cross, Liverpool Street, Hammersmith, Willesden Green and Harrow- on- the- Hill. Bear in mind that prices in East London tend to be lower than those of West London.

When searching for accommodation, bear in mind that most agencies or private landlords will require at least one month’s deposit. Always ask for a tenancy agreement and go though it carefully before you sign. Also ask for a rent book, where your monthly or weekly rent instalments will be recorded for your own reference. Be aware of internet scams and never pay money in advance, before you view a certain property. If you have any problems, ask your university accommodation department for help.
